Assessing ADHD in children and young people

This page is written for a parent or carer who thinks their child may have ADHD. Assessment in children and young people follows NICE NG87, which covers ADHD across the lifespan, and uses DSM-5 criteria adapted for the child's age and stage.

An assessment for a child draws on more sources than an adult one, because a child's difficulties show up differently at home and at school.

Recognising the signs

  • Being easily distracted
  • Not seeming to listen
  • Forgetting everyday routines

  • Disorganised schoolwork
  • Leaving tasks unfinished

Signs of hyperactivity and impulsivity

They can also include:

  • Being very noisy or talkative
  • Interrupting others
  • Finding it hard to wait their turn
  • Acting without thinking

For parents and carers

What causes ADHD, and what does not

The exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood. It tends to run in families, and differences in how the brain develops and works are thought to play a large part. Children who were born prematurely or with a low birthweight are more likely to have ADHD.

No one is to blame for ADHD. Many young children are energetic and easily distracted without having it, and girls are recognised less often, sometimes because they become quiet or anxious rather than disruptive. Being offered parenting support is not a sign that you have done anything wrong: it is one of the ways children with ADHD are helped.

What a child's assessment draws on

Evidence from more than one setting is what distinguishes ADHD from a difficulty confined to school or to home.

  • A full developmental history, taken with the parent or carer
  • Information from school, including teacher reports and any existing support plan
  • How difficulties present at home, and how they present in the classroom
  • The young person's own account, in their own words
  • Physical and mental health, and a risk assessment appropriate to their age
  • A written report for you, and a letter to your GP
How it works

How the assessment works

An assessment for a child draws on more than one setting, so it begins before the appointment.

  1. Get in touch

Contact us to talk about your child and arrange an assessment.

  2. Before the appointment

    Questionnaires for home and school

We send questionnaires for you and, with your permission, your child's school to complete.

  3. 90–120 minutes

    The assessment

A consultation with a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, with you and your child, covering development, how difficulties show up at home and at school, and your child's own account.

  4. Report and recommendations

A written report for you and a letter to your GP, setting out the findings and the recommended next steps.

  5. Support and next steps

If your child is diagnosed, we discuss the options with you, which may include support for parents, strategies at home and at school, and treatment where appropriate.

Consent

Who consents, and who is heard

Consent for assessment and for any treatment is normally given by a person with parental responsibility. A young person who has sufficient understanding of what is proposed may consent for themselves; where they do not, their views are still sought and taken seriously.

We will explain who is being asked for what before anything begins.

Not an emergency service

This assessment is a private clinical service and is not an emergency service. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent help that is not an emergency, contact your GP or call 111 and choose the mental health option.

Frequently asked questions

A Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist registered with the GMC. The assessment follows NICE guideline NG87 and uses DSM-5 criteria adapted for your child's age and stage, drawing on evidence from home and from school.

Usually 90 to 120 minutes, online by secure video or in person at our Epsom clinic. Before the appointment, parents and teachers complete standardised Conners rating scales, so the assessment reflects how your child is both at home and at school.

ADHD can only be diagnosed when the signs show up in more than one setting, such as home and school. A teacher's rating scale shows how your child manages in class, which helps the psychiatrist see the whole picture.

£1,395 online or £1,695 in person, including the assessment and a detailed written diagnostic report. All our fees are listed in full on our fees page, with no separate administration charges.
